The Story of Wigwam Village #6
Our story begins with Chester E. Lewis, an Arizona motel owner inspired by the original Wigwam Village designed by Frank A. Redford in 1937. During a trip through Cave City, Kentucky, in 1938, Chester encountered Redford’s creation and was captivated by its unique design. Despite the cultural inaccuracy—Redford used the term “wigwam” instead of “teepee”—the architectural novelty of the village left a lasting impression on him.
In 1950, Chester brought this vision to life right here in Holbrook, along the historic Route 66. He purchased the rights to Redford’s design and the name “Wigwam Village” through an innovative royalty agreement. This agreement required Chester to install coin-operated radios in each wigwam, with every dime inserted for 30 minutes of play sent to Redford as payment. Our Unique Architectural Design
Wigwam Village #6 is arranged in a charming square formation, with 15 concrete and steel teepees (which we call wigwams) on three sides and the main office on the fourth. A recent visit from one of the best concrete contractors in Colorado said, “The concrete work and architecture of the Wigwams is truly a marvel!” The office, flanked by two smaller wigwams, originally included a gas station, a common sight along Route 66 during its heyday. Each wigwam unit stands 32 feet high and has a base diameter of 14 feet, featuring a small bathroom with a sink, toilet, and shower.
Inside, our wigwams blend the past and present beautifully. We’ve retained the original handmade hickory furniture while offering modern amenities such as satellite TV and air conditioning. In keeping with our historic authenticity, you won’t find telephones or ice machines in the rooms.
A Touch of Vintage Charm
One of the most charming aspects of our motel is the collection of vintage automobiles from the 1960s and earlier, strategically placed around the parking area. These classic cars, along with small green metal benches etched with “Wigwam Village #6,” enhance the nostalgic ambiance of our site.
Chester Lewis successfully operated our motel until the late 1970s when Interstate 40 bypassed downtown Holbrook, leading to a decline in business. The motel closed in 1974, but our story didn’t end there. After Chester’s passing in 1986, his children—Clifton, Paul, and Elinor—renovated the property and reopened it in 1988. They converted part of the main office into a museum, displaying Chester’s memorabilia, including a collection of petrified wood.
A Recognized Historic Landmark
We are proud that Wigwam Village #6 has been recognized for its historical significance. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 2, 2002, our motel also received Cost-Share Grants from the National Park Service Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program in 2003 and 2007, further cementing our status as a cherished landmark.
Our proximity to notable attractions such as the Petrified Forest National Park, Meteor Crater (Barringer Crater), and the Grand Canyon makes us an ideal stop for travelers exploring the wonders of Arizona.
Our Legacy and Preservation
Wigwam Village #6 is part of a larger legacy of Wigwam Villages constructed between 1936 and the 1950s. Of the seven original villages, only three survive today: Wigwam Village #2 in Cave City, Kentucky, Wigwam Village #6 in Holbrook, Arizona, and Wigwam Village #7 in Rialto/San Bernardino, California. Each of these motels carries the unique architectural charm and historical significance envisioned by Frank Redford.
